Andy Warhol, Oxidation Painting, 1978. Copper metallic pigment and urine on canvas; 76 x 52 in (193 x 132 cm).

Also known as “Piss paintings,” Warhol worked on the Oxidation series from 1977 to 1978. He worked by spreading canvases out on the floor and coating them with a copper paint, which he would typically direct his assistants or Factory visitors to urinate on while the paint was still wet. Over time, the uric acid would oxidize the metal in the copper paint and create an attractively shimmering patina. Although the act of urination might seem to be the ultimate gesture of desecration, Warhol ironically insisted on the importance of artistic skill in their creation, explaining that “they had technique, too. If I asked someone to do an Oxidation painting, and they just wouldn’t think about it, it would just be a mess. Then I did it myself — and it’s just too much work — and you try to figure out a good design” (A. Warhol, quoted in I’ll Be Your Mirror: The Selected Andy Warhol Interviews, edited by K. Goldsmith, 2004, p. 327). Warhol particularly loved having his assistant Ronny Cutrone contribute these works, “because he takes a lot of vitamin B so the canvas turns a really pretty color when it’s his piss” (A. Warhol, quoted in The Andy Warhol Diaries, ed. P. Hackett, 1989, p. 55). He was so inspired by the painterly effects he achieved through the use of urine as a substitute for paint that he even experimented with brushing urine onto the canvas, although he gave up after finding it too difficult.

Incredible Photographs of Fractals Found in the Natural World

Fractal is described or characterized as “self-similarity.” Self-similarity refers to the reiteration of a specific pattern where a fragment of the object, figure or illustration appears similar to the whole. This trait is observable in the fern leaf, rivers, galaxies, clouds, video feedback, crystal growth and financial markets.(1)

Here are some of the most stunning examples of these repeating patterns that look the same no matter how far you zoom in or out.

The recent unprecedented video footage of a giant squid filmed in its deep ocean habitat has renewed interest in the enormous — and yet still mysterious — species. It’s believed that giant squid (genus Architeuthis) can grow up to 55 feet long. The individual captured on video via a small submarine located in the North Pacific Ocean was about 30 feet long and silver and gold in color, marine biologist Edie Widder, who helped to shoot the footage, said. Her colleague Tsunemi Kubodera added that the squid was missing its two longest tentacles. Cephalopod experts are intrigued by the world record footage.

[x]

When Neuroscience becomes art.

Neuroanatomy and neuroscience were never so interesting, especially when you don’t have to “visualize” them on an atlas, but you can admire their beauty and perfect organization in an Asian sumi-e style.

These paintings represent, in order:

Synaptogenesis - Formation of synapses between neurons, cells electrically excitable, that allows information’s transmission.

Hippocampus - Important part of the limbic system, correlated to the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory. In Alzheimer’s disease, it is the main region of the brain to suffer damage and waste.

Retina - A light-sensitive layer of the eye, with neurons interconnected by synapses.

Cortex - The outer surface layer of the cerebrum, composed of gray matter. It is so advanced in humans that it is organized in “gyri”, achieving maximum mass with minimum volume. Cortex develops memory, attention, thought, language and consciousness.

Neurons.

Neuroscience art is realized by Greg Dunn.

Penelope Umbrico’s ‘Suns from Flickr’

Upon searching the word ‘sunsets’ on flickr Penelope Umbrico discovered more than half a million photos of sunsets that had been shared by people from all around the world. Selecting a few hundred from this vast collection she created the ‘suns from Flickr’ installation in which the selected photos were placed side-by-side forming a huge wall of suns.

What I find most interesting about this piece are the questions it raises about technology as an artefact and our use of it (in all its varying forms) for the representation of natural phenomena. The sun in all its ubiquity has and continues to be photographed via the many different types of photograph technology; many of these photographs are then shared on the internet on websites like flickr, facebook and of course tumblr. Umbrico, whether intentionally or inadvertedly, lays emphasis on the underlying veneer of irony that characterises nature photography. Photography as a medium of artistic expression has indeed impressed upon us many of the often-fleeting splendours of the natural world, splendours that are sufficiently ephemeral to render the capturing of them in time, through photography, more of a worthwhile pursuit. The sun however is and will, to the best of my scientific knowledge, always be here – the giver of life and warmth so completely eternal, it begs the question: why are there so many photos of it?

‘Suns from Flickr’ is currently on display as part of the ‘Landmark: the Fields of Photography’ exhibition now on at Somerset House in London: http://www.somersethouse.org.uk/about/press/press-releases/landmark-the-fields-of-photography
